Re-arranging

I've gone and done it again! Legacy Studio is much more than just my art studio, it is also my bedroom and my office. It can be very difficult to fit multiple uses into one individual room and for that reason sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the sake of art. LOL! Admittedly, my room is much more geared towards my office and art studio. The only thing that makes it a bedroom is the large bed and dresser that sit in one tight corner of the room.

This is where my desk used to sit, directly up against my (unmade) bed. As you can see, that has been replaced by both my dressers that make up a small wall that separates my bedroom (bed) from the rest of the office.

The art studio will stay where I have always had it... for a while anyways. I honestly don't use my art desk as much as I used to since going digital with my Cintiq and Intuos 4 Tablets. All it takes is a computer, desk, and a tablet and you have yourself everything you need for a working business...

Here's the biggest change and that sacrifice that I was mentioning at the top... Yep, my desk is now in the closet... (yeah go ahead and joke). After a strong case of obsessive compulsiveness and a desire to give myself more room to work, I squeezed my business into my closet. And, except for the ONE INCH that keeps the closet doors from closing, it fits very nicely. We'll see how much of a bear it will be to hang up my clothes on the left side of my desk where the camera doesn't show.

Anyways, I thought you guys might get a kick out of that. Sacrifices are made every day in the name of art. And here's mine... LOL!

Brain Freeze

Lately I have been having a real brain freeze when it comes to new comics for No Clue and Saints Alive. I try to get the creative juices flowing, but I find between all the other work I do as well as my commissions and videos the creativity just isn't there so much, or, the pieces I do want to do are just too complicated to continue with.

I have been spending a lot of time with my girl Shai, she is my best friend and so much more. But she lives in Montana so the distance leaves us only able to communicate every day via Skype. (Praise God for Skype!) Anyways, I created a new character for Shai, The Character's name is Zoe Mackenzie and this is her introduction to No Clue and Saints Alive!

This is an actual conversation we had over Skype one evening, so of course, I take it and exploit it! Enjoy y'all!

Quick Update!

Hey guys! As many of you know, Im not drawing live today (Wednesday). I hope you miss me! This has been a very exciting week since my announcement that I would be doing permanent Live Streams! I figured since today I wasn't drawing live, I would go ahead and leave a blog post!

This week has been very encouraging as I have seen everyone who has been supporting me on my live stream and visiting my website. My views to my website went from 15 a day to 75 a day! I hope everyone keeps coming back! Also, I hope to work with a "website optimizer extraordinaire" who will hopefully take some time to sit down and help me get the website out in the market a bit more!

I've wanted to offer another tutorial for sale on my website and people seem to enjoy them so it's time to capitalize on that! Lately I have been inspired by a lot of fantasy artists, so my desire was to work on a realism illustration that would teach how to draw something a bit more fantasy and cover a few different bases. So, after thinking about the new Chronicles of Narnia movie that came out more recently I thought a Centaur would be a good challenge. It creates an excellent look at both human and horse anatomy as well as covers the basics in tone, value, color, and getting all that to work in Photoshop. So I sat down and started sketching until I got this image of a centaur. I scanned it, and warped it a little bit with the liquify tool so that it looked a bit more in proportion. Then....

6 hours of rendering and recording later, I got this piece.

This new tutorial will have 6 or 7 parts.

My Inspiration, Disney's Tarzan

I learned that there are many different artists, many different genres, many different styles... A cornucopia of individuals, if you will, that I look up to for their techniques and styles.
Today I felt like blogging about one of my favorite Disney animations- the movie Tarzan.

I absolutely love the styles and muscle structures behind the movie Tarzan. The action, movement, speed, and definition of it all is truly inspiring.

If you have not seen this movie, I strongly suggest it. Especially for a growing artist desiring to learn about body structure and movement. (I think I need to watch it again...) LOL! The mix of CGI and 2d traditional animation is a truly perfect mix. But, one of the details I enjoy the most are in the hands, the feet, and the face.

I love the strength of this face, the furrows in the eyebrows, the over-sized chin that fits the character perfectly though it's been exaggerated beyond human proportions, and the design of the eyes. There is so much depth in this piece even though there is only 2 tone shading here. The main base tone and the slightly gradient shadow. As I look at the shadow, I wonder if they shade it with a hard line, then add a small gradient to it, kinda' like how you do in Photoshop by feathering the edge.

I am a very detailed individual, I look at the very small details and touches from the different artists. This screenshot of the movie that I found on google really shows two very interesting touches in my brain. One, Look at Tarzan's right foot, see how he is clenching his toes to hold on to Clayton's pants? Look at the exaggerated look on Clayton's face... I love these little details. Look at the weight in Clayton's bicep because of the simple shading around the shoulder, chest, and tricep area.

I love the motion of this image. All the light coming from the ground which causes the top of the body to be shadowed. I do find a small discrepancy in this shot though. If you look at the background, all the lighting comes from the top which causes shadows on the bottom. Which means we have either two light sources, or a piece that isn't completely balanced. I remember this scene very well, and it was very fast paced. You would have missed that in the thick of it. So I don't fault any of the artists on that.

Also, I love how they always tuck Tarzan's head into his body, rising his shoulders, and bending his body in every small area possible. I find myself always leaving my spines on my characters perfectly straight, not using it as it should or could be used to display movement and action. One reason why its good to start off with presketches with wavy lines that attempt to caricatureize or exaggerate the poses within the cartoons.

I had the honor of working with Evan, YouTube personality from Cartoon Block.

I have had the pleasure of drawing him, and some of my videos remain posted on his channel today. With nearly 35,000 subscribers Evan draws all sorts of Saturday and Sunday morning comics, teaching how to draw those characters as he goes along.

I had the honor to do a collaboration with him the other day where he drew Super Boy and I got to color him. The video to this day has gotten close to 4,200 views.

Because of this video, my YouTube channel went from 580 subscribers to 900 subscribers in the matter of a week. Just tells you, if you know the right people... It goes a long way.
